My Rating: 3.5 Stars
Here’s why
This was my October 2022 Book of the Month selection and I was really excited to read it, but to me, it fell a little flat.
Peyote Trip is in Hell – literally. He works on the Fifth Floor, making deals with humans to sell their souls, trying to get a promotion along the way. He can’t tell you how long he’s been down there, but every time he goes to earth it’s a breath if fresh air (the air in Hell is no comparison). He has a plan, and he just needs one more Harrison family member to sell their soul for it to work. But when a new member of the fifth floor team arrives, Pey gets swept up in her story that he almost loses focus on his. With a blend of POVs, on Earth and Hell, this will be a story unlike you’ ve ever read before.
***
This was a very interesting read! I feel like it was marketed more as a humorous, satirical story than something super serious, but it definitely goes to a serious place.
I think the overall characters are fairly interesting, but there were so many! You have four Harrison family remembers on top of a family friend, and three or four people in hell as well. Plus, you have different POVs of these people and background information/flashbacks for people on Earth and Hell. It was a lot to try and keep track of, I kept waiting for it all to connect and collide – and it kind of did? – but not to the extent or importance that I was anticipating.
I am giving this book 3.5 stars because it has some interesting parts and I did think there was some unique and humorous lines, but it wasn’t exactly what I wanting going in. I thought it was going to be more satirical, Screwtape Letters feel with interactions between the two worlds more often, affecting their choices/decisions, but it is very family drama heavy. I don’t necessarily mind that, but I think I was hoping for something lighter.
If you are intrigued by this book, by all means give it a chance!
HAPPY READING 🙂
